Checked, not asserted

Health claims here are checked against the NIH, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and The Menopause Society — and every one of them is linked, so you can read the source yourself instead of taking my word for it.

Education, not medicine

Nothing here diagnoses or treats anything, and nothing here promises you a different body. Read the full disclaimer →

The walking path

If you do nothing else on this site, do these four things in this order. It is what I did, and it took four weeks, and it did not hurt.

  1. 1

    Walk for fifteen minutes, indoors

Not a workout. Not a program. Fifteen minutes in your living room, in socks, while something is on television. This is the whole first week.

  2. 2

Do it again, four more times this week

Consistency is the only variable that has ever mattered, and it is the one every fitness plan written for a 25-year-old gets wrong for a woman of 52.

  3. 3

Add a little time, not a little intensity

Fifteen becomes twenty becomes forty over four weeks. Nothing here asks you to jump, and nothing here asks you to be sore tomorrow.

  4. 4

Then, and only then, add strength

Two resistance bands and a kitchen chair. Muscle and bone are what actually change after menopause, and this is where you begin to ask for them back.

General education, not medical advice. Talk to your doctor before starting something new.

Strong by Summer: An Energy Plan, Not a Swimsuit Plan

Every spring, the same message shows up: a body you're supposed to want by a certain date. This is a different plan — eight to ten weeks built around the energy and capability you actually want this summer: walking the beach, keeping up on the hike, carrying the cooler, saying yes to the trip. Not one part of it is about how you'll look.
